Poetry has been used quite extensively throughout history as a medium of storytelling and poetic talent was a required skill for the first storytellers to enthrall their audience, before language was ever written down. However, poetry is perhaps more well known theses days for producing exposition through language and ultimately painting with words with the imagination as the canvass. With the advances of and growing popularity of other more modern art forms, traditional poetry would appear to have been left behind and on the fringes of society. However, it could be argued that the essence of the intricacies of poetic word play lives on in some of the best examples of stand up comedy. On the surface this may seem like an outlandish claim but there have been numerous popular performers, who it can be claimed, are just as adept wordsmiths and can conjure imagery using their words with hypnotic rhythms in comparable ways to the more recognized exponents of poetry in the traditional sense.
Dance is the art of moving of the body rhythmically to music. Obviously, anybody can dance and it is a popular social activity in most cultures, but to be considered artistic it must contain a set series of movements, or at least, in improvised dance, a set style with set principles that the dancer must adhere to.

There is no way of knowing when dance began but it must surely be as old as music itself – if not older. There is no doubt, however, that dance is an important form of expression for all cultures and
that the traditional ways of dancing have survived much longer than other traditional and ancient art forms. There are many forms of dance each unique, with it’s own set of rules. It can be categorized and described in various ways.
It can be argued that competitive dance such as ice skating and gymnastics are not really an art form because the freedom of expression is not as important as gaining points. Other genres of dance include ceremonial dance, erotic dance, war dance and religious dance.
There are far too many styles of dance to list here but some of the more well known include; break dancing, ballet, ballroom, tap, disco, folk/traditional, body popping, tango, waltzing, samba, belly dancing, flamenco, line dance and hula dancing.

The theatre is the home of various art forms in which live performers present an artistic event to a live audience for entertainment. The performance can include elements of story, speech, song, music, and dance.
The word ‘theatre’ is derived from Ancient Greek - théatron, ‘a place for viewing’ and - theáomai meaning, ‘to see’, ‘to watch’ or ‘to observe. The western form of theatre began in ancient Greece in the city state of Athens. The Greeks developed the ideas of dramatic criticism, acting as a career, and theatre architecture that still form the basis for modern western theatre. Much of what is watched today evolved from ancient Greek drama, from which it took technical terminology, genre classification and many of its themes, characters and plot elements. |

Theatre has also been an important artistic tradition in many other cultures notably in India around 2000 years ago, the medieval Islamic world and Japan during the 17th century.
Popular theatre today, includes performances of plays and musicals, ballets, operas, variety shows and stand up comedy. Musicals in particular have become 'blockbuster' events and tickets for the latest shows on Broadway and in the West End of London often very difficult to get due to their popularity.

Music is an art form which can be enjoyed through the medium of sound. Music is comprised of several elements including; rhythm, pitch, tempo, meter, and timbre. Then there is also melody and harmony. When blended together the artist can create music but the art form also includes the performance of the music.
Music can be divided into countless genres and subgenres. How this is done is not always (in fact, probably not often!) agreed upon by everybody and the dividing lines and relationships between the musical genres are often subtle and open to personal interpretation. |
Music may be played and heard live, may be part of a dramatic work or film, or may be recorded. There is a strong relationship between music and mathematics. Common sayings and phrases, such as, "the harmony of the spheres", and "it is music to my ears", reveal how music is ordered and it’s importance to the culture where it originated.
