Culinary art is the art of the preparation, cooking and presentation of food. With the rise of the celebrity chef presenting the hundreds if not thousands of cooking shows on TV, Culinary art is quite possibly the most participated in of all the arts.
The term culinary artist is rarely used in place of the generic term of chef. ‘The table arts’ (table manners) can be included in this genre of art but the pretentious connotations of this idea means they certainly won’t be considered art on this website!
Chefs or Culinarians are required to have knowledge of food science, nutrition and diet and are responsible for preparing meals that are as pleasing to the eye as well as to the palate. The chef must design his menu with consideration to the blend of flavours, different textures of the foods and its aesthetic qualities, in order to please his audience. It would probably be fair to say that most people wouldn’t automatically think of the chef as an artist but after careful consideration we must conclude that he or she certainly is.
