Atheism is increasingly misrepresented as the belief that there is no god. But this definition completely misses the point of what Atheism is. Atheism is the absence of belief in any Gods or spiritual beings. The word Atheism comes from a, meaning without, and theism meaning belief in god or gods.
It is possible to be both atheist and religious with examples in Buddhism and other Eastern religions. In Atheism morality and values come from the shared experiences of people and the willingness and necessity for human cooperation. In practical terms atheists often follow the same moral code as religious people, but they arrive at the decision of what is good or bad without any instruction from any god. Atheism can be closely linked to science and the scientific process. Atheists seek to understand the unexplained and unknown phenomena that surround human beings through the methodical process of experiment and elimination. |
